Two Islands, Countless Contrasts: 9 Days in Bali & Java

Day 1: Beach hotel – Bedugul – Rainforest hike – Munduk – Banyuwangi

Begin at Bedugul's colorful market before climbing into the mountains for panoramic views of the misty Buyan and Tamblingan crater lakes. A guided rainforest trek leads past giant ferns, old fig trees and wild orchids. At Lake Tamblingan, glide across the calm water in a traditional wooden canoe as ancient temple ruins emerge from the greenery.

Continue to the mountain village of Munduk and walk through clove and coffee plantations to Munduk Waterfall. In the afternoon, descend to Bali's west coast and take the ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang in East Java.

Day 2: Mount Ijen Blue Fire – Surabaya

Leave by jeep at 12:30 a.m. for Mount Ijen and begin the two-hour climb from Paltuding Base Camp at around 2:00 a.m. Learn about the demanding work of the traditional sulfur miners and witness the volcanic crater. At daybreak, the turquoise lake—the world's largest acidic crater lake—appears between the dark rock formations.

After returning to the hotel for a shower and breakfast, check out and travel approximately 290–310 kilometres toward Surabaya. Stop around Situbondo or Besuki to try local Javanese food. From Probolinggo, continue on the Trans-Java toll road and arrive in Surabaya in the late afternoon or early evening.

Day 3: Train from Surabaya to Yogyakarta

After breakfast, transfer to Surabaya Gubeng Station and board the train to Yogyakarta. The journey offers views of green rice fields, traditional villages and distant volcanoes. Arrive at Yogyakarta Tugu Station in the afternoon and walk a few minutes to Hotel Neo Malioboro. Relax in your room or explore the lively Malioboro shopping street.

Day 4: Horse-drawn carriage through Candirejo – Borobudur

Explore the peaceful village of Candirejo in a traditional andong horse-drawn carriage. Travel along narrow paths between tobacco, chili and cassava fields, meet local families, see how cassava crackers are made and try traditional gamelan instruments.

After a lunch break in the village, visit majestic Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ninth-century terraces rise against green hills and distant volcanoes. In the evening, enjoy the special atmosphere of Yogyakarta's nightlife.

Day 5: Yogyakarta Sultan's Palace – Taman Sari – Prambanan – Solo

After breakfast and check-out, visit Yogyakarta's living royal palace and discover Javanese spirituality, elegant pavilions, historic exhibits and traditional court life. Continue to Taman Sari Water Castle with its blue bathing pools and underground mosque complex.

Then explore Prambanan, Indonesia's largest Hindu temple compound. Its soaring ninth-century towers and intricate stone reliefs are unforgettable. In the afternoon, travel to the royal city of Solo, check in and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Day 6: Solo – Mojokerto – Malang

Travel from Central to East Java on the Trans-Java toll road. After around three hours, reach Trowulan, the archaeological site of the former Majapahit capital. Visit the elegant fourteenth-century red-brick Bajang Ratu gateway and Candi Tikus, a sunken ritual bathing complex.

Continue south to the cooler highland city of Malang. On arrival, visit the traditional Pasar Burung Splendid flower and bird market before checking in.

Day 7: Malang – Singosari – Wonosari Tea Plantation – Ngadisari

After breakfast and check-out, take a city tour of Malang. Visit Singosari Temple and the Wonosari tea plantation in Lawang, then continue toward Mount Bromo. Arrive in Ngadisari in the late afternoon and enjoy the cool mountain air.

Day 8: Mount Bromo sunrise – Ketapang – Ferry to Bali – Pemuteran

Travel by 4x4 jeep to King Kong Hill for sunrise over Mount Bromo. Descend into the valley, cross the Sea of Sand and climb to the crater rim. Return to the hotel for breakfast and a shower, then check out at around 9:30 a.m. and drive to Ketapang Harbor. Take the car ferry back to Bali and continue to Pemuteran.

Day 9: Biorock snorkeling – Belimbing Pupuan – Beach hotel

After breakfast, explore Pemuteran's Biorock reef independently. The world's largest artificial reef-restoration project begins only 20–50 metres from the volcanic beach, with structures visible at depths of around 3–7 metres.

After check-out, travel through the cool, fertile mountains of Pupuan, past coffee, cocoa and clove plantations. Stop in Belimbing to admire some of Bali's most authentic rice terraces, then transfer to your beach hotel in southern Bali or your hotel in Ubud, where the program ends.
